Russian GP-21U / MP-3 Gas Mask Kit

Straight out of the modern Russian civil-defense ecosystem, the GP-21U is built around the distinctive MP-3 panoramic facepiece. Compared to the old GP-5 and GP-7 family, the MP-3 looks like Russia skipped a few generations and landed squarely in the era of modern tactical respiratory protection.

Visually, the MP-3 has a strong resemblance to the American MSA Millennium, with its large panoramic lens, substantial central voice diaphragm, low-profile filter arrangement, and overall modern tactical silhouette. The two are separate mask designs, but if you're familiar with the Millennium, the family resemblance is immediately obvious.

The MP-3 features a large panoramic visor, internal oronasal cup, central voice diaphragm, adjustable head harness, and dual side filter ports, allowing the filter to be mounted on either side of the facepiece. It's a massive leap from the classic Soviet rubber hood masks most collectors associate with Russian protective equipment.

The GP-21U was primarily produced as a modern Russian civil-defense protective system, although the MP-3 facepiece has also been documented in limited use by individual Russian special-purpose personnel. It does not appear to have been standard issue across Russian special units, but that limited crossover makes the MP-3 particularly interesting to collectors of modern Russian tactical equipment.

Collectors also sometimes associate the MP-3 with the developmental “PMK-5” family of Russian mask designs, although GP-21U / MP-3 is the correct designation for these kits.
