Soviet KZS Protection Suit
Born out of the Cold War’s paranoia and practicality, the KZS (КЗС – Костюм Защитный Сетчатый) was the USSR’s answer to NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) fallout gear that soldiers could actually move in.
Constructed from a lightweight, loosely woven cotton–viscose mesh, the KZS was designed to be worn over a uniform, creating a breathable barrier that could trap radioactive dust and chemical particles while keeping troops from overheating in the field. Its unique “reed/birch” camouflage pattern (Берёзка) blends into Eastern European vegetation and remains one of the most recognizable Soviet camo designs.
Issued to engineers, recon troops, and Spetsnaz, the KZS suit was cheap, effective, and expendable — meant to be worn until contaminated, then burned. Despite that, many survived into modern surplus stockpiles, often in near-mint condition.
