Yugoslav PTE-1 JNA Military Field Telephone

Original Yugoslav PTE-1 military field telephone, manufactured by ETAS in Split, Yugoslavia for use by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA). The PTE-1 represents a later generation of Yugoslav military field communications equipment and was developed as a more modern electronic successor to the earlier M-63 field telephone.

Unlike the M-63, which uses a hand-cranked magneto for signaling, the PTE-1 uses an electronic, transistorized circuit and an internal oscillator for generating the ringing signal. The telephone was designed for use on military field telephone networks and could operate in several configurations, including local battery, central battery, and radio-control applications.

History

The PTE-1 was developed in Yugoslavia during the late Cold War period and was procured by the JNA in limited quantities. It was reportedly introduced around 1980 but was never adopted as widely as the M-63, making surviving examples particularly interesting to collectors of Yugoslav and Cold War military equipment.

The telephone was designed to remain compatible with existing Yugoslav field telephone equipment and infrastructure. It could be used with the M-63 system and could also be paired with the BN-1 external dial unit for pulse dialing applications. (not included)
